- Your tax bill calculated well before HMRC's January deadline
- Allowable expenses claimed — GMC fees, medical indemnity, CPD and equipment
- Limited company for private practice set up, maintained and compliant

Sound familiar?
Multiple income sources, one very messy return.
Most doctors are not just salaried employees. There is the NHS contract, perhaps locum shifts paid through an agency, private clinic sessions billed separately, and possibly a limited company on top. Each source has its own tax treatment. Put off until January, the whole picture becomes considerably less pleasant than it needs to be.
- ✕ NHS salary, locum agency payments and private fees arriving through separate channels with no clear reconciliation
- ✕ Allowable expenses — GMC registration, indemnity cover, CPD, specialist equipment — missed or only partially claimed
- ✕ Self-assessment filed in a hurry, often after a penalty notice has already landed
What a sorted doctor's finances look like
All income sources reconciled, every legitimate expense identified, and your return prepared and reviewed well ahead of the deadline. Nothing sitting in a drawer getting worse.
- ✓ NHS, locum and private income brought together accurately and filed correctly
- ✓ Every allowable expense — indemnity, GMC, CPD, equipment — properly identified and claimed
- ✓ Self-assessment prepared, reviewed and submitted well before HMRC's deadline
- ✓ Fixed monthly fee — the cost is predictable and the savings routinely exceed it
What clients say about hands-on tax support
Doctors are not the only professionals with complicated finances. These are the kinds of results clients report when everything is handled properly.
My other-half introduced me to Niall at OD Accountants and I have to say my finances are so much the better for it. Unlike my previous Accountants, Niall is far more hands-on, available for advice and able to care for me as an individual, rather than a faceless client. His fees are very reasonable and the money he has saved me more than covers them. If you need an Accountant who cares, Niall and OD Chartered Management Accountants are the way to go.
The service from OD has been excellent, as has their advice. It's great to have access to a financial team who can guide us with such confidence and seamlessly integrate with our internal team. We always feel well-informed and confident about our financial processes and data. Highly recommend.
Everything a doctor's finances actually need
From day-to-day bookkeeping through to strategic tax planning, the engagement covers the full picture — not just the statutory minimum.
Self-Assessment and Personal Tax
All income sources — NHS salary, locum payments, private fees, investment income — are pulled together and your return prepared accurately. You know your tax position months before the deadline, not days after it. Allowable expenses are identified and claimed in full, including GMC registration, medical indemnity, CPD and relevant equipment.
Included as standardLimited Company for Private Practice
If you operate through a limited company for private work, Corporation Tax, statutory accounts, Companies House filings and payroll are all handled under one fixed fee. OD Accountants is an Authorised Corporate Service Provider — confirmation statements and Companies House submissions are made directly by the firm. Dividend strategy and director remuneration are reviewed annually to keep the structure efficient.
For private practice limited companiesManagement Reporting and Tax Planning
For doctors with more complex arrangements — multiple income streams, private practice growth, or considering a portfolio career — management accounts and forecasting give you a clear picture of where you stand and what is coming. Tax planning is done throughout the year, not as a retrospective exercise in January. Cloud-first delivery means the data is current and accessible.

The detail changes depending on what you do. The outcome — clean books, visible tax position, less to worry about — does not.
Years of Service, Consistently Above and Beyond
“I've been there for years and Niall and his team go above and beyond the duties to provide accounting services but also general advices. They are always available if you need anything while charging very competitive prices. I could not recommend them enough.”
Welcoming, Supportive and Always Available
“As a new start up and having never dealt with an accountant, Niall at OD Accountants has been very welcoming and supportive. All our prior queries and issues have been resolved, and he is always available to meet the needs of our team.”
Supportive, Clear and Always on the Phone
“Niall and his team are supportive, clear and directional accountants who have supported our small business staff up. They're always on the end of the phone to advise and assist and provide a top service for our accounting needs. Plus they're just nice people which helps too!!”
What makes this different from a generalist practice
Most accountants can file a self-assessment return. Fewer understand how medical income actually works before you explain it to them.
Medical income handled without the tutorial
NHS salary, locum agency payments, private clinic fees and partnership income each have their own tax treatment. You should not have to explain how they work before getting a useful answer. OD Accountants works with professionals on complex multi-source income structures as a matter of course — the starting point is already further along.
Your tax position visible year-round
Cloud-first delivery means your accounts are current, not a snapshot produced once a year at filing time. You know what your likely tax bill is in October, not January — which means time to plan rather than time to panic. KPI dashboards and forecasting are available for doctors running private practice through a limited company.
Chartered-level support, personal in delivery
Founder Niall O'Driscoll is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (FCMA, CGMA) with 10-plus years of freelance restructure and turnaround work before founding OD Accountants. The chartered capability is there when it matters. The delivery is personal — clients describe the team as hands-on, always available and willing to go above and beyond, which is more than most large practices would claim.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
The process is designed to require as little of your time as possible. Most doctors are onboarded and operational within a couple of weeks.
Book a discovery call
A short call to understand your income sources, current setup and what is not working. No preparation needed on your side. You will leave the call knowing exactly what is proposed and what it will cost.
Receive a fixed-fee proposal
A clear proposal covering everything that needs handling — self-assessment, Corporation Tax if applicable, bookkeeping, filings. One fixed monthly fee with no ambiguity about what is included. No obligation to proceed.
We take over the admin
OD Accountants contacts your previous accountant if relevant, requests the records needed and handles the migration. Your cloud accounting is set up and connected. You share access to the relevant accounts and then, largely, step back.
Your finances run in the background
Your books are current, your tax position is visible throughout the year, and your returns are filed accurately and on time. Less HMRC correspondence. Fewer surprises. More of your attention where it belongs — on your patients, not a spreadsheet.
“Been with OD Accountants for over a year now. Niall and the team are brilliant. They helped me set up a company and get everything I needed in place to run my business. I'm a tricky client due to my 'digital nomad' status, but their advice…”
Things doctors usually ask before starting
Do you understand NHS pay, locum structures and private practice income — or will I need to explain how my earnings work?
The NHS pay structure, how locum agencies pay out, the difference between salaried and sessional work, and the tax treatment of private practice income are all familiar territory. You will not spend the first hour of a call explaining what a locum agency statement looks like. Where your situation has unusual features — overseas clinical work, portfolio career income, a research stipend — those are discussed in the discovery call and factored into the proposal.
What does it cost and what is included?
Pricing is fixed and agreed upfront — one monthly fee covering the services scoped in the proposal. There are no surprise invoices at year-end. The fee is set based on your income sources, whether you operate through a limited company and the level of ongoing work involved. Clients consistently describe the fees as very reasonable, and the tax savings typically more than cover the cost. A free quote is available via the form on this page.
My previous returns are a mess and I may have missed things. Is that a problem?
It is not uncommon. Catch-up work — backdating reconciliations, reviewing prior returns for missed expenses, or dealing with outstanding HMRC correspondence — is something OD Accountants handles as part of onboarding. The scope and cost of any catch-up is agreed before work starts, so there are no open-ended commitments. The goal is to get everything current and accurate, then maintain it properly going forward.
Is there a minimum contract period or a penalty for leaving?
No minimum contract and no exit penalties. Month-to-month once onboarded. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean and current books and nothing owed. The business model depends on clients staying because the service is useful, not because the contract makes leaving inconvenient.
Can you help if I am considering incorporating my private practice as a limited company?
Yes. The decision to incorporate involves weighing Corporation Tax rates, dividend efficiency, NHS pension implications and the ongoing administrative cost of running a company — all of which are discussed as part of the advisory engagement. OD Accountants is an Authorised Corporate Service Provider, so Companies House filings, confirmation statements and statutory submissions are handled directly by the firm once a company is in place.
How far in advance will I know what my tax bill is going to be?
With cloud-first bookkeeping keeping the records current throughout the year, your likely tax position is visible in real time — not reconstructed in a rush during January. For most clients, a reliable estimate is available by October or November at the latest, giving time to plan rather than simply pay. For doctors with significant private income, this is typically when it is most useful to review whether any planning steps are worth taking before the tax year closes.
