Sound familiar?
Your accountant files the returns. That is about it.
A lot of Bristol businesses end up with a perfectly compliant set of accounts and no idea what their tax bill will be, whether their margins are holding, or what the bank would say if they needed funding. Compliance is the floor, not the ceiling. The gap between what most firms provide and what a growing business actually needs is wider than it looks.
- Tax bill arrives as a surprise — no advance warning, no planning
- No management accounts, so cash flow is managed by instinct
- Switching feels too complicated, so nothing changes
What properly sorted looks like
Cloud-first workflows mean your numbers are current, not catch-up. You know your tax position before HMRC does. Management accounts are produced monthly, not annually. Switching is handled — your old data comes across and the catch-up is priced fairly.
- Corporation tax estimated and planned months before it falls due
- Monthly management accounts with KPI view — not just year-end
- Switching handled from your first call — books catch-up included
- Fixed monthly fee — no surprises on the invoice either
What Bristol and West of England clients say
OD Accountants serves businesses across Bristol, the West of England and the wider UK via cloud delivery. These are verified Google reviews from clients who started exactly where you are.
The service from OD has been excellent, as has their advice. It's great to have access to a financial team who can guide us with such confidence and seamlessly integrate with our internal team. We always feel well-informed and confident about our financial processes and data. Highly recommend.
As a new start up and having never dealt with an accountant, Niall at OD Accountants has been very welcoming and supportive. All our prior queries and issues have been resolved, and he is always available to meet the needs of our team.
Everything a Bristol SME actually needs
From day-to-day bookkeeping to strategic management reporting and virtual FD input — all delivered through cloud accounting platforms, with a chartered firm behind it.
Compliance Done, On Time
Statutory accounts, corporation tax, VAT returns and Companies House filings are handled directly by the firm under the ACSP regime. Deadlines tracked, submissions made, HMRC correspondence managed. You will not chase a filing date yourself.
Included as standardMonthly Management Accounts
KPI dashboards, cash flow forecasts and monthly management accounts produced on a recurring basis — not just at year end. Formatted for management, funders and lenders. You will know where the business stands before the month is out.
Available on all plansVirtual Finance Director Support
For businesses that want more than compliance, OD Accountants can act as an outsourced finance director — commercial finance input, M&A support, restructure advice and strategic planning, without the cost of a full-time hire. Founder Niall O'Driscoll FCMA, CGMA brings 10+ years of freelance restructure and turnaround work to clients who would not normally have access to that level of expertise.
For growth-stage businessesConsistent results across 11+ years
Verified Google reviews from clients across sectors — hospitality, consulting, retail, start-ups and service businesses. The pattern is consistent: hands-on, responsive, and the savings cover the fee.
Savings More Than Cover The Fees
“My other-half introduced me to Niall at OD Accountants and I have to say my finances are so much the better for it. Unlike my previous Accountants, Niall is far more hands-on, available for advice and able to care for me as an individual, rather than a faceless client. His fees are very reasonable and the money he has saved me more than covers them. If you need an Accountant who cares, Niall and OD Chartered Management Accountants are the way to go.”
Supportive, Clear, Always On The Phone
“Niall and his team are supportive, clear and directional accountants who have supported our small business staff up. They're always on the end of the phone to advise and assist and provide a top service for our accounting needs. Plus they're just nice people which helps too!!”
Always Available, Very Competitive Prices
“I've been there for years and Niall and his team go above and beyond the duties to provide accounting services but also general advices. They are always available if you need anything while charging very competitive prices. I could not recommend them enough.”
What makes this firm different from a standard practice
These are not marketing claims. They are the things that come up consistently in verified client reviews and the reasons clients stay for 10+ years.
Built Around Cloud Accounting
Xero and best-of-breed SaaS integrations sit at the centre of how the firm works — not bolted on as an afterthought. That means your books are current, your KPIs are visible in real time, and your management information is formatted for the way modern businesses actually operate. The compliance output is the same as a traditional firm. The insight available alongside it is considerably better.
Chartered Depth For SME Budgets
Founder Niall O'Driscoll FCMA, CGMA spent 10+ years as a freelance accountant specialising in restructures and turnarounds — including listed companies in the UK and overseas. Bristol SMEs working with OD Accountants get that level of commercial finance thinking without paying for a full-time finance director. The kind of strategic input that used to require a £90,000-a-year hire is available on a fixed monthly fee.
Hands-On. Not A Call Centre.
Verified client reviews going back over a decade describe the team as 'always available', 'fast to respond' and willing to 'go above and beyond' — not occasionally, but as the normal standard. Questions get answered the day they are asked. You will not be passed around, put in a queue or told to wait for your annual review to discuss something pressing.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
Most new clients are fully onboarded within a couple of weeks. The process is designed so the switching friction falls on us, not on you.
Book a discovery call
A short call to understand your business, your current setup and what you actually need. No preparation required — just show up and talk through where things stand. You will leave knowing exactly what the engagement would look like and what it would cost.
We handle the switch
If you are moving from another accountant, we manage the handover. Your previous records are requested, any catch-up work is scoped and priced transparently upfront. Most clients are surprised by how little they have to do.
Cloud setup and onboarding
Your accounts are migrated or set up on the appropriate cloud platform. Bank feeds connected, payroll configured, reporting templates built. The one-off setup is handled by the team — you approve what needs approving and not much else.
Books current. Tax visible.
From the first full month, your books are current, your tax position is visible, and management accounts are produced on schedule. Less time in spreadsheets, fewer surprises, and considerably less of your Sunday evenings on things that should not require your attention at all.
“Been with OD Accountants for over a year now. Niall and the team are brilliant. They helped me set up a company and get everything I needed in place to run my business. I'm a tricky client due to my 'digital nomad' status, but their advice…”
Things Bristol businesses usually ask first
We are based in Bristol — do you actually serve clients here, or is this a London-only firm?
OD Accountants serves Bristol and West of England businesses directly. The firm has a second office in Wells, Somerset — trading as Probusiness, acquired in 2023 — specifically to support clients in this region. Cloud delivery means the quality of service is identical regardless of where you are, and the Wells office provides a local presence for clients who want it.
What does it actually cost, and what is included?
Fees are fixed monthly and scoped to what your business needs — not a rolling hourly rate with surprises at year end. The exact figure depends on turnover, transaction volume and the level of advisory input you want. Clients consistently describe the fees as 'very reasonable' and note that the tax savings typically cover the cost of the engagement. Indicative pricing is discussed on the discovery call.
Our books are in a mess — is that a problem when switching?
Catch-up work is common. Most new clients arrive with books in some state of disarray — a backlog of unreconciled transactions, VAT records that need untangling, or years of data on a system that does not talk to anything. The catch-up scope is assessed at the start and priced separately, so there are no ongoing inflated fees once the records are current. It is a one-off, not a long-term penalty.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. Engagements run on a rolling monthly basis. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean books and nothing owed beyond the period covered. The firm's client retention speaks for itself — verified reviews include clients with 7, 10 and 11+ years of tenure — but that is because the service warrants it, not because a contract makes leaving difficult.
We already use Xero — do you work with our existing setup or start from scratch?
Existing Xero setups are assessed on the discovery call. In most cases the chart of accounts, bank feeds and reporting templates are reviewed and tidied rather than rebuilt. If data migration from another platform is needed, that is a specialist service OD Accountants provides directly — including full historical data migration into Xero or other cloud platforms.
How far in advance will we know our corporation tax bill?
With monthly management accounts and cloud-based bookkeeping, the corporation tax estimate is updated on a rolling basis throughout the year — not calculated retrospectively once the year-end accounts are drafted. You should have a reliable figure at least three to four months before the payment deadline, with enough time to plan accordingly.
Less to worry about every month. Starting now.
