Sound familiar?

Still working out your tax bill in January?

Freelancing creates a specific kind of accounting mess. Income comes in from multiple clients or platforms, expenses are scattered, and the question of whether to trade as a sole trader or through a limited company never quite gets answered. Most freelancers end up doing a rough calculation in January and hoping they have kept enough back.

  • Self-assessment filed in a hurry with numbers you are not confident in
  • No clear picture of what you owe HMRC until it is almost due
  • Uncertain whether a limited company would actually save you money

What sorted looks like for freelancers

With a chartered accountant handling your books on a fixed monthly fee, your tax position is visible year-round. No January scramble. No guesswork on what to keep back. And if the numbers justify a limited company, that gets set up properly rather than put off indefinitely.

  • Self-assessment prepared accurately with every allowable expense captured
  • Tax liability estimated and updated throughout the year, not retrospectively
  • Sole trader versus limited company assessed on your actual numbers
  • Fixed monthly fee — no surprise invoices at year-end

What freelancers and consultants say

From digital nomads to growing consultancies, OD Accountants works with clients whose situations are rarely straightforward — and stays with them long-term.

★★★★★

Been with OD Accountants for over a year now. Niall and the team are brilliant. They helped me set up a company and get everything I needed in place to run my business. I'm a tricky client due to my 'digital nomad' status, but their advice…

What you get

Everything your freelance finances actually need

One fixed monthly fee covers the compliance, the planning and the questions you send mid-month — without being charged extra for each one.

01

Self-Assessment and Personal Tax

Your self-assessment return is prepared from complete, current records rather than a folder of bank statements handed over in December. Every allowable expense is identified and captured. You will know your tax liability well before HMRC sends a reminder.

Included as standard
02

Bookkeeping on Cloud Software

Records are maintained through Xero and best-of-breed SaaS integrations rather than a spreadsheet you update when you remember to. Your income, expenses and bank position are current at any point in the year. No year-end scramble to reconstruct twelve months of transactions.

Cloud-first delivery
03

Limited Company Setup and Advice

Whether a limited company makes sense for you depends on your income, your plans and how you want to draw money from the business. That question gets answered properly here, on your actual numbers — not a generic comparison. If it makes sense, the setup is handled directly under the firm's ACSP status.

Hands-On, Not a Faceless Client

“My other-half introduced me to Niall at OD Accountants and I have to say my finances are so much the better for it. Unlike my previous Accountants, Niall is far more hands-on, available for advice and able to care for me as an individual, rather than a faceless client. His fees are very reasonable and the money he has saved me more than covers them. If you need an Accountant who cares, Niall and OD Chartered Management Accountants are the way to go.”

Why OD Accountants

Why freelancers stay for years, not months

Three things that make a practical difference when you are running your own work — and want an accountant who already understands that.

🧾

No Explaining How You Work

OD Accountants works regularly with consultants, digital nomads, internet sellers and non-standard client setups. The questions freelancers usually spend twenty minutes answering — multiple income streams, working from home, foreign clients, IR35 adjacency — do not need a preamble. The firm already knows how this works.

📊

Tax Visibility Year-Round

Rather than a single conversation in January, your tax position is visible throughout the year via cloud accounting software and regular reporting. You know what to keep back as income comes in. The difference between a manageable tax bill and an uncomfortable one is usually just having the numbers in front of you in time.

🎯

Chartered Depth on a Freelance Budget

Founder Niall O'Driscoll FCMA, CGMA spent over a decade doing freelance restructure and turnaround work for listed companies before founding OD Accountants. That depth of commercial finance experience is applied to clients at every size — including sole traders and early-stage limited companies that would not normally have access to it.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

The process is straightforward. Most new clients are fully onboarded within a week of the first call, with records transferred and current.

1

Book a discovery call

A short call to understand your situation — how you work, what your income looks like, whether you are sole trader or limited company, and what you actually need. No preparation required. You will leave the call knowing exactly what is proposed and what it costs.

2

Receive a fixed-fee proposal

A clear, written proposal sets out what is included and at what monthly cost. There are no variable charges for individual questions or ad hoc calls — that is part of the service. If you are switching from another accountant, the proposal includes how the transition will work.

3

Onboarding and data migration

Previous records are migrated into the cloud accounting platform. If your books are behind or incomplete, that gets sorted as part of onboarding. You do not need to arrive with everything in order — most clients do not.

4

Back to the actual work

Once set up, the accounting runs in the background. Books current, tax position visible, self-assessment handled and filed on time. Less of your Sunday evenings spent on things you did not enjoy in the first place.

Questions

Things freelancers usually ask first

Do you work with freelancers who have more than one income stream or overseas clients?+

Yes, and it is a common setup rather than an unusual one. Multiple clients, foreign income, platform-based earnings and non-standard arrangements are handled regularly. The self-assessment process accounts for all of it — you will not be asked to simplify a complicated situation before the firm can help with it.

What does a freelancer accountant package actually cost?+

Fees are fixed monthly and set out clearly in a written proposal before anything starts. The cost depends on the scope — sole trader self-assessment only sits at one end, a limited company with monthly bookkeeping and management reporting at the other. Clients in Google reviews describe pricing as 'very reasonable' and note that the money saved more than covers the fee. Indicative figures are discussed on the discovery call.

My books are behind and I have not filed my last self-assessment. Can you still help?+

That is a straightforward onboarding situation rather than a problem. Catch-up bookkeeping and outstanding returns are handled as part of getting started. There may be a one-off cost to bring records current, which is agreed upfront. The important thing is that it gets sorted rather than left any longer.

Is there a minimum contract period or long-term tie-in?+

No long-term contract. If the arrangement is not working after three months, you can leave with clean, current books and nothing outstanding. The engagement is structured to be worth continuing because it is useful, not because leaving is inconvenient.

Should I be operating through a limited company rather than as a sole trader?+

It depends on your income level, how you draw money, your appetite for admin and your plans for the business. The answer is different for a consultant billing £40,000 a year than for one billing £120,000. OD Accountants will run through the comparison on your actual numbers — the advice is specific rather than a general rule of thumb.

How far in advance will I know what my tax bill is going to be?+

With current cloud-based bookkeeping, a reasonable estimate of your tax liability is available at most points in the year rather than only at year-end. Payments on account, the second payment on account in July and the January balancing payment all become easier to plan for when the underlying numbers are not assembled retrospectively.

Ready when you are

Less guesswork on your tax bill.

OD Accountants handles the bookkeeping, self-assessment and tax planning for freelancers on a fixed monthly fee — so your finances are current and your liability is never a last-minute calculation.
