Sound familiar?
MTD is here. Is your software?
Making Tax Digital for VAT is already mandatory for most VAT-registered businesses, and MTD for Income Tax is coming for the self-employed and landlords. The requirements are specific — compatible software, digital links between records, submissions direct to HMRC. Using spreadsheets alone no longer qualifies. Many businesses find out they are not properly set up only when HMRC writes to them.
- VAT returns still being prepared outside MTD-compatible software
- Not certain whether your current records meet HMRC's digital linking rules
- No clear picture of what MTD for Income Tax means for your situation
What MTD compliance looks like
The right cloud accounting software solves most of this immediately. OD Accountants sets up your MTD-compatible stack, ensures your records meet HMRC's digital linking requirements and files your submissions directly. When MTD for Income Tax applies to you, you will know well in advance.
- VAT records kept in MTD-compatible software with submissions filed directly to HMRC
- Digital linking rules met end-to-end — no manual data re-entry in the chain
- MTD for Income Tax timeline reviewed for your specific entity and income type
- Fixed monthly fee covering the software, the compliance work and the questions in between
What clients say about working with us
A chartered management accounting firm that keeps clients informed and in control — from routine MTD filings to the more complex compliance questions.
The service from OD has been excellent, as has their advice. It's great to have access to a financial team who can guide us with such confidence and seamlessly integrate with our internal team. We always feel well-informed and confident about our financial processes and data. Highly recommend.
My other-half introduced me to Niall at OD Accountants and I have to say my finances are so much the better for it. Unlike my previous Accountants, Niall is far more hands-on, available for advice and able to care for me as an individual, rather than a faceless client. His fees are very reasonable and the money he has saved me more than covers them. If you need an Accountant who cares, Niall and OD Chartered Management Accountants are the way to go.
Everything MTD compliance requires
Cloud software setup, digital record-keeping, VAT submissions and forward planning for MTD for Income Tax — all under one fixed monthly fee.
MTD for VAT Setup and Filing
Your VAT records are moved into MTD-compatible cloud accounting software and your digital chain is set up to satisfy HMRC's linking rules from end to end. VAT returns are prepared and submitted directly to HMRC via Making Tax Digital — on time, every quarter. No manual workarounds, no bridging software bodges.
Included as standardDigital Records and Bookkeeping
MTD requires that your records are kept digitally throughout the year, not just at return time. Your bookkeeping is maintained in cloud accounting software on an ongoing basis, so the data behind each submission is current and auditable. If HMRC ever queries a return, the trail is already there.
Ongoing monthly serviceMTD for Income Tax Planning
MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment is being rolled out in phases for self-employed individuals and landlords. OD Accountants reviews which phase applies to your income level and entity structure, and prepares your records and reporting cadence before the obligation lands. Quarterly digital updates to HMRC will replace the annual self-assessment return for those in scope.

Cloud first means MTD is already how we work
Making Tax Digital is not a bolt-on for OD Accountants — it describes the way the firm has operated since its founding.
MTD is our default, not an upgrade
OD Accountants was built around cloud accounting software from the start. Every client's records are maintained digitally, every submission goes directly to HMRC via MTD-compatible platforms. There is no legacy paper-based workflow to migrate away from — you are already in the right place.
MTD for Income Tax mapped early
The rollout of MTD for Income Tax is phased by income level and entity type, and many businesses do not know where they sit until the obligation is almost upon them. OD Accountants reviews your specific position and sets up quarterly digital reporting before HMRC's deadline, not after. Surprises are largely avoidable when the planning starts in advance.
Chartered oversight on every filing
Founder Niall O'Driscoll FCMA, CGMA brings the qualification and commercial depth of a chartered management accountant to every engagement, including routine MTD compliance. That means your submissions are reviewed by someone who understands the numbers behind them — not just the mechanics of filing them.
MTD-compliant in four straightforward steps
From discovery call to first MTD submission, the process is direct. Most clients are up and running within a fortnight.
Book a discovery call
A 30-minute call to understand your current setup — what software you are using, whether you are already VAT-registered, and where your MTD obligations stand. You will leave the call knowing exactly what needs to happen and what it will cost. No obligation to proceed.
We review your records
OD Accountants assesses your existing bookkeeping and identifies any gaps in the digital chain that would fail HMRC's MTD requirements. If your records are behind, catch-up work is scoped and priced separately so there are no surprises later.
Software and links set up
The right cloud accounting platform is configured for your business, digital links are established end-to-end, and access for HMRC submissions is authorised. You do not need to touch the technical setup — that is handled.
Filed on time, every time
From the first MTD submission onwards, your VAT returns go to HMRC on schedule with a full digital audit trail behind them. Questions get answered when they come up. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.
“I've been there for years and Niall and his team go above and beyond the duties to provide accounting services but also general advices. They are always available if you need anything while charging very competitive prices. I could not recommend them enough.”
Common questions about Making Tax Digital
My business is VAT-registered. Am I already required to be on Making Tax Digital?
Yes — MTD for VAT has applied to all VAT-registered businesses since April 2022, regardless of turnover. If you are still preparing VAT returns outside MTD-compatible software or using bridging software as a workaround rather than a permanent solution, your records may not fully meet HMRC's digital linking requirements. OD Accountants reviews your current setup and closes any gaps.
What does MTD compliance cost and what is included?
Fees are fixed monthly and cover digital record-keeping, MTD-compatible software, VAT return preparation and direct submission to HMRC. The exact amount depends on transaction volume and whether catch-up work is needed at the start. Clients consistently describe fees as very reasonable — and for most, the tax savings and penalty avoidance more than cover the cost. Indicative pricing is discussed on the discovery call.
My books are behind and my records are not digital. Can you still take me on?
Yes. Catch-up bookkeeping is scoped and priced separately at the outset so you know what the tidying-up costs before committing to anything. Once the backlog is cleared and the digital chain is established, ongoing compliance runs as normal. Starting with books in some state of disarray is not unusual — the goal is to leave with considerably less to worry about.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. There is no minimum term and no lock-in. If the arrangement is not right after three months, you leave with clean, MTD-compliant records and all your data. Most clients stay for years — multiple verified Google reviews go back more than a decade — but that is down to the quality of the service, not a contractual obligation.
MTD for Income Tax is coming. When does it apply to me and what do I need to do now?
MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment applies from April 2026 to self-employed individuals and landlords with combined income over £50,000, with lower thresholds following in subsequent tax years. In scope businesses will need to send quarterly digital updates to HMRC rather than a single annual return. OD Accountants maps your specific position against the rollout schedule and gets your records and reporting cadence ready before the obligation lands.
Will MTD change how I can see my tax position during the year?
For those within MTD for Income Tax, quarterly digital updates give HMRC a running picture of your income and expenses — and give you one too. With cloud accounting maintained on an ongoing basis, your tax liability is visible throughout the year rather than being a number that appears in January. That makes planning considerably more straightforward.
