Sound familiar?
Still not sure where you stand on IR35?
IT contractors operating through a personal service company face a set of questions most accountants handle poorly — or avoid entirely. IR35 status, the right salary and dividend mix, what expenses are legitimately claimable, and whether your books will hold up if HMRC takes an interest. These are not complicated problems, but they do need an accountant who already knows how contracting works.
- ✕ IR35 status unreviewed — working on assumption rather than documented assessment
- ✕ Salary and dividend split not optimised — paying more income tax than necessary
- ✕ Year-end accounts arriving as a surprise, with a tax bill you were not prepared for
What sorted looks like
OD Accountants handles the compliance, advises on the structure, and keeps your numbers current throughout the year — not just at year-end. You get a chartered firm that already understands how IT contracting works, without having to explain it first.
- ✓ IR35 position reviewed, documented and defensible before it becomes a problem
- ✓ Salary and dividend structure planned each year to keep your personal tax bill where it should be
- ✓ Corporation Tax and self-assessment calculated in advance — no year-end surprises
- ✓ Fixed monthly fee covering compliance and ongoing advice — no hourly rate surprises
What contractors say after switching
IT contractors and consultants operating through limited companies have been using OD Accountants for bookkeeping, tax planning and company compliance for over a decade.
Been with OD Accountants for over a year now. Niall and the team are brilliant. They helped me set up a company and get everything I needed in place to run my business. I'm a tricky client due to my 'digital nomad' status, but their advice…
Unlike my previous Accountants, Niall is far more hands-on, available for advice and able to care for me as an individual, rather than a faceless client. His fees are very reasonable and the money he has saved me more than covers them. If you need an Accountant who cares, Niall and OD Chartered Management Accountants are the way to go.
Everything your limited company needs
From day-to-day bookkeeping through to IR35 review and annual accounts, the engagement covers every part of the compliance and tax picture for an IT contractor operating through a limited company.
Tax Planning and Compliance
Your Corporation Tax liability is calculated well before the payment deadline — not the week before. Director salary and dividend planning is reviewed each tax year so your personal tax bill stays at the right level. Self-assessment is handled and filed, including any employment income, rental income or other sources alongside your contracting income.
Included as standardBookkeeping and Cloud Accounting
Your company books are kept current throughout the year via cloud accounting software, so your position is always visible — not reconstructed at year-end. Expenses are categorised correctly, bank feeds reconciled, and VAT returns filed on time under Making Tax Digital. You can see your numbers at any point without waiting for a quarterly call.
Cloud-first deliveryCompanies House and Statutory Filings
Annual accounts, confirmation statements and all Companies House submissions are handled directly by OD Accountants under the Authorised Corporate Service Provider regime. Deadlines are tracked and met. Nothing sits waiting for a reminder from Companies House.
ACSP — filed directlyConsistent across clients and sectors
Contractors, consultants, start-ups, retailers and hospitality operators — verified Google reviews go back over a decade and describe the same experience: hands-on, available and worth the fee.
Years of Above-and-Beyond Accounting Support
“I've been there for years and Niall and his team go above and beyond the duties to provide accounting services but also general advices. They are always available if you need anything while charging very competitive prices. I could not recommend them enough.”
Confident About Finances and Data
“The service from OD has been excellent, as has their advice. It's great to have access to a financial team who can guide us with such confidence and seamlessly integrate with our internal team. We always feel well-informed and confident about our financial processes and data. Highly recommend.”
Welcoming, Supportive, Always Available
“As a new start up and having never dealt with an accountant, Niall at OD Accountants has been very welcoming and supportive. All our prior queries and issues have been resolved, and he is always available to meet the needs of our team.”
What makes the difference for contractors
There are plenty of accountants willing to file your year-end accounts. Fewer understand how IT contracting is structured, how IR35 applies in practice, and how to keep your tax position optimised throughout the year.
IR35 Handled, Not Avoided
IR35 is a genuine risk for IT contractors and it is not a question most generalist accountants will engage with in depth. OD Accountants reviews your contracting arrangements, assesses the relevant factors and documents the position — so if HMRC ever asks, there is a clear and considered answer on file. That is considerably more useful than a brief conversation and a vague reassurance.
Tax Visibility Throughout the Year
Because your books are kept current via cloud accounting software, your Corporation Tax position is always visible — not estimated at year-end when it is too late to do anything about it. Dividend planning, salary optimisation and personal tax estimates are available when decisions need to be made, not after they already have been.
Companies House Filings Done Directly
OD Accountants is an Authorised Corporate Service Provider, which means confirmation statements and Companies House submissions are handled directly by the firm under the ACSP regime. For a contractor running a limited company, that is one less thing to track — and one less source of late-filing penalties.
Up and running in four steps
Most contractors are switched over and fully onboarded within two to three weeks. The process is straightforward and the firm handles the parts you would rather not deal with.
Book a discovery call
A short call — usually 20 to 30 minutes — to understand your contracting situation, current setup and what you need from an accountant. No preparation required on your part. You will leave the call knowing exactly what is proposed and what it costs.
Receive your fixed-fee proposal
A clear proposal covering exactly what is included and at what monthly cost. No hourly rates. No ambiguity about what falls inside or outside the engagement. If you are switching from another accountant, the transition is managed — including any mid-year catch-up work needed.
Cloud accounting set up
Your Xero environment is configured, bank feeds connected and any historical data migrated or tidied. If your books are behind, they are brought current before the ongoing service begins. You do not need to understand the software — it is set up and maintained on your behalf.
Accounts handled, focus elsewhere
From there, your bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, year-end accounts, Corporation Tax and self-assessment are handled on a fixed monthly fee. Your tax position is visible year-round, deadlines are met without chasing, and questions get answered the day you ask them.
“Niall and his team are supportive, clear and directional accountants who have supported our small business staff up. They're always on the end of the phone to advise and assist and provide a top service for our accounting needs. Plus they're just nice people which helps too!!”
What contractors usually ask first
Do you actually understand how IT contracting works — IR35, PSCs and the rest?
Yes. IT contractors operating through a personal service company face a specific set of tax and compliance questions — IR35 status, dividend and salary structure, allowable expenses for home working and equipment, and how to deal with inside-IR35 engagements where tax is deducted at source. These are not edge cases for this firm. You will not need to spend the first meeting explaining what a PSC is or how the off-payroll rules work.
What does it cost and what is included?
OD Accountants works on fixed monthly fees, agreed upfront. The fee typically covers bookkeeping, VAT returns, director payroll, year-end statutory accounts, Corporation Tax, Companies House filings, self-assessment for the director and ongoing advice. Pricing is agreed before the engagement starts so there are no hourly rate surprises mid-year. Fees are quoted individually based on your turnover and requirements — contact the firm for a fixed-fee proposal.
My books are behind and my previous accountant left things in a state. Can you still take me on?
This is a common situation. Most contractors switching accountants have some degree of catching-up to do — missed reconciliations, unfiled VAT, or a year-end that was handled late. OD Accountants assesses what is needed to bring the records current, quotes any catch-up work separately and clearly, and then begins the ongoing engagement from a clean position. It is manageable and the team is used to it.
Is there a long-term contract or a notice period?
No long-term contract. If the engagement is not working after three months, you leave with clean and up-to-date books and nothing further owed. The firm is confident enough in how it works that lock-in is not part of the model.
I have an inside-IR35 contract alongside some outside-IR35 work. Can you handle both?
Yes. Mixed-status contracting — where some engagements are deemed inside IR35 and others outside — creates a more complex personal tax picture, because employed income and self-employed or director income sit alongside each other on the same self-assessment return. OD Accountants handles this regularly and will ensure each income stream is reported correctly, with the overall tax position planned in advance rather than discovered at filing time.
How far in advance will I know what my tax bill is going to be?
Because your books are kept current throughout the year via cloud accounting, your Corporation Tax liability can be estimated at any point — not just in the weeks before the payment deadline. For most contractors on fixed monthly engagements, a clear tax estimate is available at least three to four months ahead of the due date, which gives meaningful time to plan dividend draws or retain funds accordingly.
