Ecommerce Accounting Canada

Ecommerce Accounting Canada

Your cross-border ecommerce books, under control.

Selling into Canada from the UK — or operating across both — brings a specific set of accounting headaches that a generalist firm will not have seen before. OD Accountants works with online retailers, internet resellers and internationally active ecommerce businesses every day. Fixed monthly fees, FCMA-qualified advice, and questions answered the day you ask them.

  • UK and Canadian sales reconciled cleanly, every month
  • Tax obligations on both sides of the Atlantic visible in advance
  • Cloud accounting stack configured for multi-currency ecommerce workflows
  • Management reports ready for you, your bank or your funders

No long-term contract. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean books and nothing owed.

Sound familiar?

Cross-border ecommerce. Two tax regimes. One spreadsheet.

Selling into Canada from the UK — or running a business across both markets — means dealing with currency conversion, differing VAT and GST obligations, multi-platform settlement reports, and a year-end picture that rarely matches what you expected. Most generalist accountants will work it out eventually. The question is whether you want to pay for the learning curve.

  • ✕ Multi-currency Amazon and Shopify payouts that take hours to reconcile each month
  • ✕ No clear view of your Canadian tax exposure until the bill arrives
  • ✕ Cloud accounting set up for a single-country business, poorly suited to cross-border sales

What sorted looks like

An ecommerce-ready accounting setup handles the reconciliation, keeps the tax picture current on both sides, and gives you monthly management accounts that reflect how the business actually trades — not just what arrived in the bank.

  • ✓ Ecommerce platform settlements reconciled and books current every month
  • ✓ UK and Canadian tax obligations tracked and visible well before any deadline
  • ✓ Cloud accounting configured for multi-currency, multi-platform ecommerce from day one
  • ✓ Competitive fixed monthly fees — no surprises on the invoice either

Been with OD Accountants for over a year now. Niall and the team are brilliant. They helped me set up a company and get everything I needed in place to run my business. I'm a tricky client due to my 'digital nomad' status, but their advice…

What you get

Everything the fee covers, clearly set out

Three core areas of work that ecommerce businesses with Canadian operations typically need handled. Each is included in the fixed monthly engagement.

01

Books Clean and Current Monthly

Multi-currency ecommerce transactions — whether from Amazon, Shopify, Etsy or direct sales — are reconciled each month against your bank and payment processor statements. No year-end scramble to piece together twelve months of settlement reports. You go into every quarter knowing exactly where you stand.

Included as standard
02

UK and Canadian Tax Compliance

Corporation Tax in the UK and the relevant Canadian obligations — GST, HST, income tax for individuals or directors — are tracked and planned for, not discovered at filing time. Know your liability months in advance. OD Accountants has experience with non-standard, internationally active clients and will not need the situation explained from scratch.

Included as standard
03

Management Reports and KPI Dashboards

Monthly management accounts showing revenue, margin, cost of sales and cash position — built on a cloud accounting stack and formatted for you, your bank or any third-party funder. For clients who want it, OD can act as a virtual finance director, providing the kind of strategic commercial input normally reserved for businesses large enough to employ one full-time.

Why OD Accountants

What makes the difference for cross-border ecommerce clients

Three things that matter when your accounting setup has to work across UK and Canadian markets simultaneously.

🌐

No Explaining Cross-Border Complexity

OD Accountants already works with internet resellers, Amazon sellers and internationally active founders — including clients with digital nomad and non-standard setups. You will not need to explain how your business model works before getting a useful answer. The firm understands multi-platform payouts, currency conversion and the particular compliance shape of UK businesses trading internationally.

☁️

Cloud-First from the Start

The firm is built on cloud accounting software — Xero and best-of-breed SaaS integrations — so multi-currency ecommerce data flows cleanly into management accounts without manual intervention. The result is a real-time picture of the business rather than a historical summary produced three months after the fact. That matters when sales volumes and exchange rates move quickly.

🎯

Chartered Depth Without the Big-Firm Distance

Founder Niall O'Driscoll FCMA, CGMA spent more than ten years as a freelance accountant specialising in restructures and turnarounds, including listed UK and overseas companies. That background is brought directly to SME ecommerce clients. Questions get answered the day they are asked, fees are fixed, and you are not passed between junior staff every time you call.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most new clients are fully onboarded and producing clean management accounts within a few weeks of the first call.

1

Book a Discovery Call

A short call to understand your business, your platforms, your current setup and where things are causing problems. No obligation. You will know what happens next before the call ends.

2

Receive a Fixed-Fee Proposal

A written proposal setting out exactly what is included and what it costs each month. No hourly rates, no ambiguity about what triggers an additional charge. Review it at your own pace.

3

We Handle the Transition

Switching from another accountant, or setting up from scratch — either way, OD Accountants manages the handover. Existing data is migrated into the cloud platform if needed. You do not have to co-ordinate between firms.

4

Books Current, Tax Visible

From the first complete month onwards, your books are reconciled, your tax position is tracked, and management accounts are ready when you need them. Cross-border complexity handled. Considerably less to think about.

Questions

Things people usually ask before getting in touch

Do you understand how ecommerce businesses selling into Canada actually work — GST, HST, multi-currency payouts, platform fees?+

Yes. OD Accountants works with internet resellers and online retailers as a matter of course — including Amazon sellers, Shopify merchants and businesses operating across multiple markets. Canadian GST and HST obligations for UK-based sellers, the treatment of multi-currency settlements, and the reconciliation of platform fees against net payouts are not new territory. You will not need to brief us on the basics before getting useful advice.

What does it cost, and what exactly is included?+

Fees are fixed monthly and agreed upfront in writing before any work begins. What is included depends on the size and complexity of your business — bookkeeping, management accounts, Corporation Tax, VAT, and any Canadian compliance work are all in scope. Clients consistently describe the pricing as very reasonable, and the tax savings achieved typically more than cover the fee. Request a quote and you will have a written figure within one business day.

My books are in a mess and I am behind on filings. Is that a problem?+

Not an unusual situation, and not a reason not to get in touch. Catch-up work is handled as part of onboarding — existing records are reviewed, gaps are identified, and a plan is agreed. There may be an additional one-off fee for catch-up depending on the extent of the work, but that will be set out clearly before anything starts. Arriving with books in some state of disarray is, frankly, quite common.

Is there a long-term contract?+

No. Engagements run month to month. If it is not working after three months, you can leave with clean books and nothing outstanding. The aim is to keep clients because the service is useful, not because a contract makes leaving inconvenient.

Can you act as a virtual finance director for a growing ecommerce business?+

Yes. For clients who want more than compliance, OD Accountants can provide FD-level input — KPI dashboards, cash-flow forecasting, margin analysis, scenario modelling and strategic commercial advice. This is the firm's core specialism: bringing the level of finance support normally reserved for larger businesses to SMEs that would not ordinarily have access to it.

How far in advance will I know what my tax bill is going to be?+

For most clients, the current year Corporation Tax liability is visible on a rolling basis throughout the year — not presented as a surprise at the point of filing. Management accounts updated monthly make the position clear at any given time. If the position changes materially — because of a large one-off sale into Canada, for example — that will be flagged as it happens.
