What you receive

One operational idea per issue

Each edition is built around something concrete — a structure, a workflow, a framework — drawn from real SME finance practice.

Management reporting frameworks broken down

How to structure monthly management accounts so they surface something useful, not just confirm what you already knew.

Cloud accounting and app-stack patterns

Specific integrations and workflow changes that reduce manual input and improve the quality of your financial data.

Cash flow and forecasting approaches

Scenario-modelling techniques and forecasting structures drawn from real SME engagements, not textbook examples.

Tax and compliance in commercial context

Statutory deadlines and HMRC changes explained alongside the commercial implication for your planning and cash position.

The service from OD has been excellent, as has their advice. It's great to have access to a financial team who can guide us with such confidence and seamlessly integrate with our internal team. We always feel well-informed and confident about our financial processes and data. Highly recommend.

Is this for you?

Written for a specific kind of business owner

If most of these fit, this is the briefing it was written for.

  • You run a UK limited company and want to understand your numbers beyond the annual accounts.
  • You use cloud accounting software but are not certain you are getting useful management information from it.
  • You work with an outsourced accountant and want to get more from the relationship than compliance alone.
  • You want the kind of strategic finance thinking normally available to larger businesses applied to your SME.
Behind the brief

Written by Niall O'Driscoll FCMA, CGMA

Niall is the founder of OD Accountants, a cloud-first chartered management accounting firm based in London with a second office in Wells, Somerset. He writes this briefing to share the operational finance patterns he sees working across SME clients — what holds up in practice, what doesn't, and how modern accounting software changes the picture.

Before founding OD Accountants, Niall spent more than a decade as a freelance management accountant specialising in restructures and turnarounds, working with businesses ranging from growing SMEs to listed companies in the UK and overseas. The firm he built acts as a virtual finance director for clients across FMCG, tech, hospitality, retail and internet commerce — bringing chartered management accounting capability to businesses that would not typically have a full-time finance director.
